Abstract
This thesis discusses about real objects as media in teaching conversation. Realobjects can facilitate the students learning effectively and interestingly in helping the studentsto master the speaking skill. As we know almost all the teachers in the schools only used thetext book in teaching and learning activity that can make the students bored with the materialso that by presenting some information through media, realia helps the students to makeEnglish language input as possible. The writer assumes that teaching conversation by usingrealia will activate students in speaking because the realia may reflect the real world ofcommunication. At the schools, the students more easily know how to explain somethingwhen they touch the things and the students are more active and happy when the teacherbrings the real object in the class.The problem of the research is “How effective is the use of real object in teachingconversation at the second semester students of class X of SMA Negeri 01 Sungai Pinyuh inacademic year 2006/2007?”The main purpose of this research is to find out the effectiveness of teachingconversation by using real object (Realia) to the second semester students of class X of SMANegeri 01 Sungai Pinyuh in academic year 2006/2007. The population of this research is 156students and Based on the Arikunto statement, there 156 students as samples. In this research,the researcher took sample from class X C = 38 students of SMA Negeri 01 Sungai Pinyuh inacademic year 2006/2007.There are two hypotheses in the research, first, Null Hypothesis (Ho) states that theuse of real objects (Realia) in teaching conversation to the second semester students of classx of SMA Negeri 01 Sungai Pinyuh in academic year 2006/2007 is not effective. And thesecond, Alternative hypothesis (Ha) states that the use of real objects (Realia) in teachingconversation to the second semester of the students in class x of SMA Negeri 01 SungaiPinyuh in academic year 2006/2007 is effective.In carrying out the research, the writer used pre-experimental design with pre-test andpost test in collecting the data. The writer used measurement technique to collect the data andused 30 items multiple choice test as the tools of collecting the data.The finding of this research was gained by analyzing the students’ pre-test and posttest.The mean score of pre-test is 3.9, which is qualified poor to average, while the meanscore of post-test is 6.0 which is qualified average to good. The interval score of pre-test andpost-test is 2.16 which is qualified.Based on the result of the data computation, it is obtained that the test of significancehas indicated a significant difference. Thus, based on the level significance 5% with degreeof freedom (df) 38 – 1 = 37, indicates that the null hypothesis which say “There is noteffective” is rejected and the alternative hypothesis which say “there is effective”, isaccepted.It means teaching conversation by using real object (Realia) is effective to measurestudent’s mastery of conversation.
