Abstract

This thesis discusses about the student’s ability in comprehending narrative texts. To comprehend narrative text is not a simple effort for teachers because most students think that reading is boring and extremely difficult. The problems of this research are “How well have the ninth grade students of SMPN 14 Pontianak comprehended narrative text? Do the students find difficulties in comprehending narrative text?”. The purposes of this research are to investigate how well the ninth grade students of SMPN 14 Pontianak have comprehended the narrative text and to investigate whether or not the ninth grade students of SMPN 14 Pontianak find difficulties in comprehending narrative text. The method was used in this research was descriptive method. The technique of data collecting was measurement. The tool of data collecting was written test which consist of 20 multiple-choice items. The population of this research was all the ninth grade students of SMPN 14 Pontianak in academic year 2011/2012 which was 245 students. The writer used purposive random sampling to do this research. The sample of this research was class 3A with 35 students. Based on the findings of the research, the mean score of the students’ in comprehending narrative text was 75. It shown that their comprehension narrative text was average to good. In other words, the ninth grade students of SMPN 14 Pontianak in academic year 2011/2012 are average to good in comprehending narrative text. Therefore, the researcher hopes that the other English language teachers should always try to create an interesting text and media for their teaching. Based on the result, teachers can apply narrative text to improve the student in comprehending narrative text
