Abstract

This research aimed at improving students’ reading comprehension on recount text through numberhead together. Numberhead together is one of cooperative teaaching strategies which can encourage students to comprehend the lesson individually. This research was conducted for eighth year students of SMP Negeri 8 Pontianak in academic year 2012/2013. In this research, the writer selected class VIII C as the subject of the research which consists of 35 students. The researcher conducted a classroom action research in three cycles to monitor the students’ improvement. The researcher acted as the teacher during the research period. Observation checklist and field notes were used as the tools of data collecting. Through the data collection, researcher succeed to improve students reading ability since the score of the students improving. The research findings showed that the mean score of students’ reading comprehension in the first cycle is 46.57, the second cycle is 58.71 but in the third cycle is 69. It has proved that Numbered Heads Together can improve the students’ reading ability and give same opportunities in the teaching learning process.
