Abstract

This thesis is a study on improving students’ reading comprehension through Schema Activation Strategy of the second year students of SMP Negeri 2 Pontianak. This research is intended to answer the problem about whether or not Schema Activation Strategy improves reading comprehension of the second year students of SMP Negeri 2 Pontianak.For this purpose, the writer has conducted a classroom action research to the second year students of SMP Negeri 2 Pontianak in which the research ertreated the students by using Schema Activation strategy in four cycles. The sampletaken to be treated is class VII F, which consists of 39 students.The English class indicates that the second year students of SMP Negeri 2 Pontianak faced some problems. They did not comprehend reading textwell. They tend to be passive and be busy by them selves. After treatment, they didthe activity actively and they could comprehend the reading text well by using the Schema Activation Strategy.The result of the research indicates that the students’ mean score in answering comprehension question improve in every cycle. On the first cycle the students’ mean score is 68.97. This is classified as Average to Good. In the second and third cycle the students’ mean still classified as Average to Good although thescore increased. On the fourth cycle students really showed their improvement withthe mean score is 82.33. This is classified as Good to Excellent.To measure the activities, the researcher had made field note andasked her collaborator to help her to observe the activities by filling the observation sheets.The research result shows that students’ reading comprehension improve after treating through Schema Activation Strategy.
