Abstract

Digital media offers alternatives to make education more exciting and effective, particularly in teaching and learning English as a Foreign Language (Yordming, 2017). This research was carried out through a case study to investigate and find out any factors of challenges and problems Junior High School EFL teachers face when using digital media during their teaching activities at public junior high schools in Pontianak, as well as to identify the strategies employed by teachers to overcome those challenges and problems. Interviews and documentation were used in data collection, and those were analyzed using two different data analysis techniques, including qualitative and content analysis techniques with the triangulation strategy. It was reached that in teachers' experiences, they used digital technology devices and software applications for teaching with challenges such as difficulties in using digital technology, their teaching preparation, and their conditions unfamiliar with digital teaching. Further, the causative factors of the challenges and problems for the teachers included their lack of competence, insufficient teaching material, inadequate digital teaching ability, and technical issues involving internet connection and insufficient devices. Thus, they learned and improved their ability to use digital media independently, providing the digital media they needed, creating learning resources for their students, asking for their colleagues' help, and attending training related to digital media.
