Abstract
The researcher concerned on improving students’ vocabulary in terms ofunderstanding the meaning of words and writing words in correct spelling. Thosewere the students’ problems found in the classroom when the researcher taughtthe students about narrative text which their mean score did not achieve thestandard score used in the school (KKM) that is 65 for each student.The purpose of the research were to find out how can index card matchand jumbled letters improve the students’ vocabulary especially in understandingthe meaning of words and writing words in correct spelling. Index card match andjumbled letters games facilitated students to have a chance to reread, to rememberand to practice the spelling and the meaning of words through games. By thoseconsiderations, this activity helped students to improve vocabulary, as the result,the students understood the reading text talked about and wrote the answer incorrect spelling.The method of this research was classroom action research. The researcherobserved the improvement of students’ vocabulary by collecting the data throughwritten test and observation technique, the written test contained of 20 questions.In addition, students’ observation checklist and field notes were the tools ofobservation technique in this research.This research was done in two cycles. After applying index card match andjumbled letters games, the students improved their vocabulary in understandingthe meaning of words and writing words in correct spelling from cycle to cycle.Based on the research findings, the students’ mean score for meaning aspect in thefirst cycle was 73.43, and second cycle was 82.81. The students’ mean score forspelling aspect in the first cycle was 50.62, and second cycle was 72.81. on thewhole, the students’ general mean score in the first cycle was 62.03, and secondcycle was 77.81. Therefore, the students achieved KKM score in the second cyclewhich means that the students improved their vocabulary.Furthermore, the students understood the the message of reading textgiven by the teacher and answered the following questions in correct spelling ofwords. Besides, the students cooperated in the learning process. They worked inpair, helped each other while looking for the match and rearranging the jumbledletters. Thus, building the cooperative character were considered as the otherstrengths in applying index card match and jumbled letters game.
