Abstract

This research is focused on teaching English pronunciation that used oral reading as teaching strategy. The aim of conducting this research was to investigate whether theuse of oral reading in teaching English Pronunciation increased the achievement of theFirst Year Students of MTs Islamiyah Pontianak in Academic Year 2006/2007.In oral reading activities, the teacher gave the reading text to the students and thenthe students together with the teacher make a list of the words contain of fricative consonant sounds. The students listen to the cassette of the right pronunciation of those fricative consonant sounds. The students pronounce the words based on the cassetteseveral times. Through this technique, the students were given the same chance toincrease their pronunciation especially fricative consonant sounds.This research applied action research as the method. The subject of this researchis 13 students who have problems in pronunciation. This research was done in four meetings or cycles. Therefore, teacher or researcher and the collaborator could see thestudents’ interesting in pronunciation in every meeting or cycle that was observed.The result of students’ pronunciation in the first meeting was 56,2 which categorized as poor to average and the last meeting was 86,9 which were categorized intogood to excellent. It indicates that oral reading activities could increase students’pronunciation on the first year students of MTs Islamiyah Pontianak on the academic year 2006/2007.
