Abstract
Baja ST37 merupakan jenis baja karbon rendah dengan kandungan karbon sebesar 0,16% berat. Dengan jumlah karbon yang rendah tidak memungkinkan dilakukan pengerasan (hardening) untuk memperbaiki sifat mekaniknya. Salah satu cara yang dapat dilakukan adalah dengan menambah unsur karbon pada baja yaitu dilakukannya proses carburizing. Proses carburizing bertujuan untuk mengeraskan permukaan baja dengan menambah unsur karbon pada permukaan material. Metode yang digunakan untuk penambahan karbon adalah pack carburizing dengan variasi komposisi dan ukuran mesh karbon dan katalisator. Karbon aktif yang digunakan adalah arang batok kelapa dan katalisator kerang kepah. Proses pack carburizing dilakukan pada suhu 950 C dan waktu penahan selama 60 menit dengan air sebagai media quenching. Dari penelitian ini dapat simpulkan bahwa komposisi dan ukuran mesh memiliki pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap nilai kekerasan baja ST37 yang diberikan perlakuan pack carburizing. Nilai kekerasan tertinggi diperoleh pada mesh 50 komposisi 60/40% karbon terhadap katalisator dengan nilai sebesar 787,1 HV dan nilai terendah diperoleh pada mesh 40 komposisi 10/90% karbon terhadap katalisator dengan nilai sebesar 363,3 HV. ST37 steel is a type of low carbon steel with a carbon content of 0.16% by weight. With a low amount of carbon, it is not possible to harden (hardening) to improve its mechanical properties. One way that can be done is by adding carbon elements to steel, namely through the carburizing process. The carburizing process aims to harden the steel surface by adding carbon elements to the surface of the material. The method used for carbon addition is pack carburizing with variations in the composition and size of the carbon mesh and catalyst. The activated carbon used is coconut shell charcoal and a kepah clam catalyst. The pack carburizing process is carried out at a temperature of 950 C and the holding time is for 60 minutes with water as a quenching medium. From this study, it can be concluded that the composition and size of the mesh have a significant influence on the hardness value of ST37 steel given the pack carburizing treatment. The highest hardness value was obtained at mesh 50 composition of 60/40% carbon against the catalyst with a value of 787,1 HV and the lowest value was obtained at mesh 40 composition of 10/90% carbon against the catalyst with a value of 363,3 HV.
